Agartala, May 26 (FD) The enduring contribution of rebel poet Kazi Nazrul Islam to literature, culture, humanity and social harmony continues to remain highly relevant even in the modern digital era, Tripura Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman said on Tuesday while inaugurating celebrations marking the 127th birth anniversary of the legendary poet.
The main program was organized at Sonamura Town Hall under the initiative of the School Education Department with support from the Information and Cultural Affairs Department. Addressing the gathering, the minister described Kazi Nazrul Islam as a poet, playwright, musician, philosopher and novelist whose influence extended far beyond literature.
He said Nazrul was not only a literary figure but also a freedom fighter who called upon people of every caste, creed and religion to unite for the liberation of the country. According to the minister, the rebel poet symbolized awakening, consciousness and revolution, while also spreading the message of love, peace, humanity and communal harmony.
Kishor Barman stated that Nazrul’s literary works and cultural contributions continue to inspire people in both India and Bangladesh. He added that the poet’s powerful voice against injustice, discrimination and superstition still holds immense significance in contemporary society.
Highlighting the importance of literature in the present technological age, the minister warned that people distancing themselves from literature would eventually become deprived of the true light of education and humanity. He stressed that literature not only educates individuals but also shapes them into compassionate and responsible human beings.
“India’s soul lies within its culture,” the minister remarked while emphasizing the need to preserve and expand cultural practices across the country. He also urged schools, colleges and universities throughout the state to promote literary activities alongside technological advancement.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Sipahijala district Additional District Magistrate Subhash Dutta, District Education Officer Mohammad Selim and social worker Uttam Das. Cultural performances by artists from different organizations of the subdivision added vibrancy to the celebration.
Earlier in the day, another tribute program was organized at Nazrul Kalakshetra by the Information and Cultural Affairs Department. Speaking there as chief guest, Kishor Barman once again described Nazrul as a symbol of patriotism, revolution and humanity whose writings awakened society against oppression and inequality.
Former Vice-Chancellor of Tripura University and Padma Shri awardee Arunoday Saha also addressed the gathering and said Nazrul’s contribution to Bengali literature and cultural awakening remains unforgettable. He noted that the poet’s compositions, including ghazals and devotional songs, continue to captivate audiences even today.
