Tripura boosts fish production to meet rising demand: Minister Sudhangshu

Agartala, Feb 14 (FD) Tripura Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das today said that the state Government has taken multiple steps to increase the productions of fish as the people of the state consume highest amount of fish in the country.
Inaugurating the state level fish festival at the Purbasha complex here minister said, “The people of Tripura consume maximum amount of fish in the country. 91% people consume fish and the demand for fish is increasing here every day”.
When the demand for the consumers is 1, 17,000 million tons annually, the state produces only 85,000 MT and to meet the demand the state imports 32,000 MT from neighbouring Bangladesh, West Bengal, Andhraparadesh and Assam, he said.
Das said, fish is cultivated in 38,000 sq km across the state and the state government has taken initiative to increase the water bodies through different state and central schemes.
“We are setting up an integrated aqua park in Unakot district at a cost of Rs. 43 crore which will produce 2,500 -3000 MT fish when it would start productions. The central government has sanctioned Rs. 43 crore for the project”, he said.
Das said that around 50% of the funds were allocated for creation of the water bodies and the North Eastern Council (NEC) was extending all sorts of help for augmentation of pisciculture in the state.
He also pointed out that fish festival is being organised in all the eight districts of the state to inspire youths to join in fish cultivation as it is a profit making business adding that Rs. 160 crore was sanctioned in the last year’s budget for developments of fish culture in the state. FD JK
