In a devastating incident that shook the state of Mizoram, an under-construction railway bridge collapsed near the Sairang area, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 18 workers on Wednesday. The incident occurred around 10 am, with around 35-40 workers present at the site, about 21 km from Aizawl.
Expressing his grief, Chief Minister Zoramthanga conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims and assured that rescue operations are underway. The incident drew immediate attention from officials, with railway officers and senior officials of the Northeast Frontier Railway rushing to the site to coordinate relief efforts.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to extend his condolences and announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakhs from the PM's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the families of each deceased worker, along with Rs 50,000 for the injured. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed his anguish and assured all possible assistance to Mizoram through NDRF and local administration efforts.
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw tweeted that an ex gratia compensation of Rs 10 lakhs would be provided in case of death, Rs 2 lakhs for grievous injuries, and Rs 50,000 for minor injuries. The collapse triggered a high-level investigation committee to examine the matter, as officials mentioned that the bridge girder process was approved by IIT experts.
As the rescue operation continued, several more workers were feared to be trapped under the debris. Seventeen bodies had been recovered from the wreckage at the time of reporting, and the search for survivors continued with the NDRF, state administration, and railway officials working tirelessly.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal expressed her shock at the incident and revealed that some of the deceased workers hailed from Malda district in her state. She pledged assistance and coordination between the administrations of both states to aid in the rescue operation. Banerjee also emphasized that the Malda district administration was prepared to extend all necessary help and compensation to the affected families.
The tragic incident has highlighted the urgent need for improved construction safety measures and proper oversight to prevent such catastrophes in the future. As the nation mourns the loss of lives, efforts remain focused on rescuing any survivors and providing support to the affected families during this difficult time.
