Agartala, May 31 (FD) Tripura Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury visited Jampui hills in north Tripura district after a blast that occurred at an under-construction tourist facility in Betlingchhip, located near the border with Mizoram in North Tripura district. He has ordered an investigation into the incident, official sources said.
According to official sources, a group of unidentified miscreants reportedly hurled a low-intensity bomb and vandalised parts of the eco-park and other tourist amenities in the early hours of Wednesday. The incident resulted in damage to several construction works intended to promote tourism in the scenic Jampui Hills.
“To assess the situation, I held a meeting with the local MLA, district magistrate, superintendent of police, and senior officials,” Chowdhury wrote in a Facebook post. “I have directed the officials to identify those responsible through a thorough investigation and ensure strict action is taken against them,” he added.
The tourism minister held a high level meeting at Jampui hills yesterday, which was attended by the District Magistrate of North Tripura district, Chandni Chandan, district police chief Avinash Rai and Secretary of the Forest Department, U K Chakma.
A forensic team has already visited the site and collected evidence. Security has been tightened along the Tripura-Mizoram border in the wake of the incident. Notably, Betlingchhip—the highest peak in Tripura—is situated in Mizoram's Mamit district, a location both states have claimed.
Recently, the Tripura government halted construction of the tourist project after Mizoram raised objections. The 66-km-long border shared between the two states has seen rising tension, with Mizoram-based civil society and student groups opposing the project.
Condemning the blast, Mizoram’s apex student body, the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), labeled it a “mischievous act” allegedly aimed at blaming the Mizo community. FD JK
