Agartala, Aug 25 (FD) Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma on Tuesday said the party has not held any formal discussions regarding an alliance with any political party, asserting that any possible tie-up with a national party must ensure meaningful protection of the rights and interests of Tripura’s indigenous people.
Pradyot said neither he nor Tipra Motha had received any official proposal or approach from any political party so far. He made it clear that the party would not enter into an alliance merely for electoral gains unless it resulted in concrete safeguards and benefits for indigenous communities.
“If my indigenous people do not get anything, I don’t think I want to do such politics,” he said.
He asserted that any national party seeking Tipra Motha’s support would first have to demonstrate a genuine commitment to protecting indigenous rights. Without such assurances, he questioned how political parties could expect indigenous voters to support them.
Pradyot said Tipra Motha would wait until the elections are formally announced before taking a final decision on its political course. However, he maintained that the party was fully prepared to contest independently if no acceptable alliance materialised.
“We are prepared to fight any electons. We contested the TTAADC election and the Assembly election alone, and we will contest the Village Council election alone too,” he said.
Rejecting attempts to portray Tipra Motha’s political movement as being directed against Bengali residents of Tripura, Pradyot said the party’s struggle was centred on protecting the indigenous population, their land and their future.
“We have no enmity with Bengalis in Tripura. We are fighting to protect our land and to protect our future that’s all,” he said.
Pradyot also expressed concern over what he described as the illegal entry of people from Bangladesh, referring to developments in Patharkandi and other parts of the region while highlighting concerns over demographic changes.
At the same time, he assured that non-tribal residents living within areas under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council would not lose their lawful rights. Those living peacefully in these areas, he said, would continue to be protected under the law.
Reiterating the party’s stand, Pradyot said Tipra Motha’s political objective was to safeguard the constitutional, social and economic interests of indigenous people while ensuring peaceful coexistence and harmony among all communities in Tripura. FD JK
