Agartala, Sept 23 (FD) The opposition TIPRA Motha today called for a dawn-to-dusk bandh on 30th September in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council to press for “Greater Tipraland” and constitutional solution of the problems of the state’s indigenous people.
Tripura’s royal scion and former Chairman of the tribal based party said, the bandh was called to send a strong message to the central government about their demands for ‘Greater Tipraland’ and to make indigenous people conscious about their right for constitutional solution of their problems.
The TTAADC constitute two third of the state’s total areas, which is home to the tribals, who form one third of the state’s estimated 40 lakh population.
The TIPRA Motha secured 13 seats in the state’s 60-member assembly in the last elections held in February last. The party also rules the 30-member tribal council area.
“Marginalized indigenous people had long been waiting for constitutional solutions to their problems, but the central government was not paying heed to their genuine demand. They want an early solution to their problems. The bandh is aimed at giving a strong message to the centre regarding our genuine demands”, he told reporters at his residence in the palace compound.
Earlier he announced that talks for constitutional solutions of their problems had held in Delhi with the Union Home Minister Amit Shah and it was positive.
Asked as to why a bandh was called when talks were advancing in a positive manner, the royal scion said, “Yes I have met Shah and several rounds of talks had been held in Delhi. It seems he is positive; otherwise he would not have met me. But the Government of India has several other works to do as they govern the country. As our people want an early solution, we want to send a message to the centre about our genuine demands”.
Replying to a question that if his party would accept any other proposal by the centre other than their demand for a “Greater Tipraland”, Debbarma said, “Let the alternative proposal come from the centre then we will discuss it in our forum”. FD JK
