Agartala, Apr 30 (FD) The Meteorological Centre, Agartala, on Thursday issued an updated weather warning forecasting moderate thunderstorms, lightning, gusty to squally winds, and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall across all districts of Tripura over the next three days, raising concerns over further damage and disruption.
According to an IMD release issued today the state has already witnessed intense weather activity in the past 24 hours. South Tripura’s KVK-South recorded the highest rainfall at 96.6 mm, followed by 58.6 mm in Teliamura, where wind speeds touched a high of 98 kmph.
A widespread spell of severe weather between April 28 and April 30 has caused extensive damage across the state, affecting thousands of families and public infrastructure, as per the State Emergency Operation Centre. In North Tripura, Dharmanagar subdivision reported 136 damaged houses, while Panisagar and Kanchanpur also suffered significant losses. In Unakoti district, Kumarghat alone recorded 458 damaged houses.
Dhalai district witnessed considerable destruction across subdivisions, with over 50 houses affected in Longtharai Valley. One fatality due to lightning was reported in the district. Sepahijala district emerged among the worst-hit, with 967 houses damaged in Bishalgarh subdivision alone, prompting the setting up of relief camps sheltering hundreds of affected families.
In West Tripura, over 200 houses were damaged in Sadar subdivision, while Khowai district reported multiple incidents of destruction and displacement. Gomati district faced both structural damage and infrastructure disruption, including damage to 81 electric poles, while South Tripura subdivisions such as Belonia, Sabroom, and Santirbazar reported extensive losses.
Overall, 4,202 houses have been damaged across the state, including 195 fully destroyed. The government has disbursed over Rs 70 lakh as relief to affected families, while four relief camps are currently sheltering nearly 800 people.
The IMD has warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall (7–20 cm) is likely in several districts, accompanied by thunderstorms and winds of up to 60 kmph. Authorities have cautioned against risks such as waterlogging, flash floods, landslides, and damage to crops and infrastructure, urging residents to remain vigilant as the adverse weather system is expected to persist till May 3.
