THRP orders action against DSP for custodial torture

Agartala, Nov 17 (FD) The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken serious exceptions to the misuse of power by a senior police officer, Prasun Tripura and asked the Director General of police to start a departmental proceedings against him.
Justice (retired) Swapan Chandra Das, who is head of the THRC has asked DGP of the state to pay a compensation of Rs 25 thousand to Kaushik Debnath of Abhaynagar area, who was subject of torture by DSP Prasun Tripura, by realising the money from his salary within a time frame of one month.
The Commission has also directed the home department and DGP Tripura to launch departmental proceedings against Tripura.
The incident occurred on January 25 of this year when doctor Debnath was waiting at his house gate in Abhoynagar area to receive food from a delivery boy of Swigy and saw that Prasun’s son and daughter were engaged in a quarrel with some other boys.
When the doctor was taking some clips from his mobile phone, the daughter of the police officer pounced on him and snatched the mobile phone. Then a section of friends of the girl and the son of Tripura started beating the doctor. The father of the doctor, Binoy Debnath rushed to the spot for rescue of his son.
Within few minutes of receipt of information, the police officer, who is SDPO of Amtali Area reached the spot and dragged the young doctor to the police vehicle and took him to Abhoynagar police station and tortured him severely in the custody.
When Benoy Debnath lodged a complaint with THRC, the commission of its own investigated the matter and passed the judgement. FD JK
