THRC takes suo motu cognisance of alleged assault on woman, seeks DGP probe

Agartala, June 29 (FD) The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the alleged brutal assault on a woman at Tata Kalibari under Takarjala Police Station in West Tripura district and directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident.
The order was issued by THRC Chairperson Justice Arindam Lodh after the Commission examined a report published in a local daily newspaper highlighting the alleged incident.
According to the Commission, the report claimed that more than 72 hours had elapsed since the assault, yet no First Information Report (FIR) had been registered by the Officer-in-Charge of Takarjala Police Station. It also questioned the response of statutory bodies, including the State Women's Commission and the Human Rights Commission.
The newspaper report alleged that the victim was accused of maintaining an illicit relationship and was summoned before a village Panchayat Salishi (informal village tribunal). During the meeting, she was allegedly subjected to a brutal assault, with some women reportedly inserting a bamboo stick into her private parts.
The victim was initially admitted to Bishalgarh District Hospital before being referred to Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital, where she reportedly underwent major surgery. The report further claimed that while undergoing treatment, the woman identified those allegedly involved in the assault.
The Commission also took note of allegations that supporters of the TIPRA Motha Party had threatened the victim's family members during their visit to the hospital.
Considering the gravity of the allegations, the THRC directed that copies of the newspaper report and its order be forwarded to the DGP for a comprehensive investigation into all aspects of the case.
The Commission has instructed the DGP to submit a detailed inquiry report before it. The matter has been listed for hearing on July 27, 2026, when the Commission will review the findings of the police inquiry. FD JK
