Agartala, Sep 18 (FD) The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has intervened following a complaint of wrongful arrest filed by a resident of Dhalai district. The commission has directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to submit a detailed enquiry report by October 16.
The complaint, lodged by Babul Das of Bhowliabasti in Ambassa, alleges that police misidentified him as another individual wanted in a criminal case. The arrest was executed under a warrant issued against one Barun Das in connection with a case registered at Dharmanagar Police Station, North Tripura.
According to the complaint, Das asserted that he had never visited Dharmanagar and had no criminal case pending against him. Despite this, the Officer-in-Charge of Ambassa Police Station and Sub-Inspector Hannanir Rahaman allegedly treated him as “Babul Das alias Barun Das” and carried out the warrant.
“The complainant told the concerned OC and SI that he was not Barun Das and no criminal case was pending against him, but they did not pay heed,” the THRC order stated.
THRC Chairperson Justice Arindam Lodh observed that the case raised serious concerns about violation of fundamental rights. The commission has taken cognisance of the complaint and directed the state police chief to ensure the enquiry is completed and findings are submitted by mid-October. FD JK
