Agartala, June 3 (FD) The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has sought detailed reports from the Directorate of Health Services in connection with two separate incidents of alleged medical negligence that reportedly resulted in the deaths of patients at two major government hospitals in the state.
In separate orders issued by THRC Chairperson Arindam Lodh, the Commission took serious note of media reports concerning the deaths of a patient at GB Pant Hospital and a pregnant woman at IGM Hospital, observing that the allegations, if found true, indicate possible violations of patients' human rights.
In the first case, the Commission referred to a news report published on June 1 under the headline, “Patient in Critical Condition in Toilet for a Long Time, Then Died There.” According to the report, a patient admitted to the Medicine Ward of GB Pant Hospital was allegedly found lying inside a toilet for an extended period on May 31, 2026, without any inquiry or intervention from the attending medical staff.
The report further stated that the patient was eventually discovered and rescued by family members in a critical condition but had died by the time assistance was provided. Taking serious cognizance of the allegations, the Commission observed that the incident, as reported, reflected a blatant violation of the patient's human rights and raised concerns regarding the standard of care provided at the hospital.
Before initiating formal proceedings, the THRC has directed the Director of Health Services to submit a factual report on the incident within 15 days.
In a separate order, the Commission also took note of newspaper reports published on May 30 under the headline, “Maternal Death at IGM, Negligence Alleged.” The reports alleged that a pregnant woman died at IGM Hospital due to the absence of medical officers at a critical stage of treatment.
The Commission observed that the incident pointed to serious deficiencies in healthcare services and indicated a possible violation of the patient's rights. Consequently, it directed the Director of Health Services, Government of Tripura, to furnish a detailed report after examining the circumstances surrounding the death.
Copies of the relevant newspaper reports have been forwarded to the Director along with the Commission's orders for necessary inquiry and submission of findings.
The THRC has fixed July 3, 2026, as the date for submission of reports in both cases. FD JK
