Agartala, July 31 (FD) The Sixth State Finance Commission (SFC) of Tripura on Friday submitted its report to Chief Minister Manik Saha, recommending a new formula for the distribution of the State's own tax revenue among Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) for the five-year period from 2026-27 to 2030-31.
The report was handed over by Commission Chairman Abhishek Singh, IAS, in the presence of Member Secretary and Finance Department Additional Secretary Dr. Akinchan Sarkar, IAS.
According to official sources, the Commission has proposed a more equitable and need-based allocation of financial resources, with special emphasis on providing greater support to the state's backward districts and subdivisions to promote balanced and inclusive development.
Constituted on January 7, 2025, under Articles 243(I) and 243(Y) of the Constitution, the two-member Commission was tasked with reviewing the financial position of local self-government institutions and recommending measures to strengthen fiscal decentralisation, improve the financial capacity of local bodies and enhance grassroots governance.
Chief Minister Saha appreciated the Commission's efforts, noting that the report was prepared after extensive consultations with government departments, local bodies, elected representatives and domain experts. He said the government would carefully examine the recommendations before taking appropriate steps to further strengthen local self-governance and ensure balanced development across the state.
Officials said the report would now be placed before the State Cabinet for consideration. Following Cabinet approval, the recommendations are expected to be implemented during the award period from 2026-27 to 2030-31.
While the report is expected to significantly influence Tripura's fiscal framework for local self-government over the next five years, the Commission has not disclosed its detailed recommendations or the proposed revenue-sharing ratios. Officials said the contents would remain confidential until they are examined and approved by the Cabinet before being placed in the public domain. FD JK
