Agartala, Sept 27 (FD) Tension has reportedly intensified in parts of Gomati district ahead of the Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Village Committee elections, with allegations of attacks involving supporters of Tipra Motha, BJP-backed groups and Independent candidates emerging from Chandpara (Nija Chandra Para), Poangbari and Bhanu Para.
The three localities are situated close to one another and fall under the Karbook Rural Development (RD) Block in Gomati district. The geographical proximity of the areas has added to concerns following a series of politically sensitive incidents reported during the final phase of campaigning.
In Chandpara (Nija Chandra Para), an alleged attack on the residence of Tipra Motha supporter Jiban Chakma has been reported. According to allegations, around 20 people attacked his house. The complainants have named Sudip Chakma, Rajesh Chakma, Sajal Chakma and Srijan Chakma, among others, in connection with the incident. Jiban Chakma reportedly sustained injuries and was subsequently admitted to hospital for treatment.
The allegations further claim that those involved were supporters of the BJP but were contesting or operating under the banner of Independent candidates in the ongoing Village Committee elections. The claims could not be independently verified.
A separate incident has reportedly been reported from Bhanu Para, where a Tipra Motha candidate was allegedly attacked. Tipra Motha supporters have alleged that BJP supporters were using Independent candidates to contest in areas where they were not fielding candidates directly. The rival side has reportedly disputed the allegation, claiming instead that BJP workers were attacked and that several supporters required hospital treatment.
The competing allegations have contributed to heightened tension in the locality, with residents calling for an impartial investigation to establish the sequence of events and identify those responsible.
Another controversy has been reported from Poangbari, where allegations have been levelled against Tipra Motha MDC Sujay Uchoi. Local residents have alleged that he arrived in the area in an intoxicated condition, behaved improperly and attempted to assault or threaten people. These allegations have not been independently verified.
With polling scheduled for September 28, the incidents have raised concerns over the maintenance of peace in the area. Any determination of responsibility in the reported incidents would require investigation and evidence from the authorities concerned. FD JK
