Agartala, Oct 7 (FD) Tension prevailed high and prohibitory order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita at clamped at Kadamtala in North Tripura district till Wednesday following clashes between two communities over collections of Durga puja subscriptions in which one person was killed and eight others were injured, police today said.
Police said, trouble started on Sunday, when a group of puja organizers demanded subscription from a person, who refused to pay subscriptions.
Superintendent of Police, Bhanupada Chakraborty said, one person died of bullet injuries and eight others injured when people of two communities clashed over the collection of subscriptions.
Two houses were also ransacked and as many shops were set ablaze after the clash, the district police chief added.
Eight persons were arrested in this connection and Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita was clamped in the area
“We have also deployed contingents of Tripura State Rifles and Assam Rifles along with state police to maintain peace and communal harmony. Situation is under control now”, Chakraborty told reporters.
In a notification on Sunday night, Sajal Debnath, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Dharmanagar, said, “I am satisfied on the information received from the SP, North Tripura, that there are sufficient grounds for restricting movement of the public at Kadamtala PS Jurisdiction areas”.
Meanwhile, the North Tripura District police on their X handle after the clashes said, “An incident related to law and order that occurred today under Kadamtala PS has been resolved with the intervention of religious leaders from both communities”. FD JK
