Agartala, June 2 (FD) Tripura Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury has urged the Central Government to introduce direct flight services between Agartala and Mumbai, emphasizing the growing demand for enhanced air connectivity between the northeastern state and the country's financial capital.
In a letter addressed to Union Civil Aviation Minister Sushanta Chowdhury drew attention to his earlier representation on the matter and reiterated the necessity of establishing a direct air link between the two cities.
The minister stated that Tripura, being a strategically significant state in the Northeast, requires stronger connectivity with major metropolitan centres to support its developmental aspirations. He noted that Mumbai is a major hub for commerce, healthcare, education, tourism and employment, attracting a considerable number of travellers from Tripura throughout the year.
Chowdhury pointed out that passengers travelling between Agartala and Mumbai are currently dependent on connecting flights, often involving lengthy transit periods and multiple stopovers. This, he said, causes considerable inconvenience to students, patients seeking specialized medical treatment, businesspersons, government officials and other travellers.
He emphasized that the introduction of a direct flight service would not only reduce travel time and enhance passenger convenience but also strengthen regional connectivity, promote tourism, facilitate trade and investment, and contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of Tripura.
The minister urged the Ministry of Civil Aviation to examine the feasibility of launching direct Agartala-Mumbai flight operations at the earliest. As an alternative, he requested the Centre to ensure smoother and more convenient connectivity through improved flight schedules under the existing aviation framework.
The demand assumes significance at a time when north-eastern states are actively seeking better air connectivity with major Indian cities to accelerate economic growth, attract investment, and improve access to educational, healthcare and tourism opportunities. FD JK
