Agartala, May 19 (FD) More than 1,500 surrendered militants in Tripura have threatened to launch a massive statewide agitation after May 29 if their three-point charter of demands is not fulfilled by the state government within the stipulated deadline.
The announcement was made by Amrit Reang, joint convener of the surrendered militants’ association, during an interaction with media persons on Tuesday. He said a memorandum outlining their demands and proposed course of agitation had already been submitted to the office of Chief Minister Manik Saha.
According to Amrit Reang, members of the association had earlier organised blockade programmes at Champaknagar, Barmura and several other key locations on February 20, ahead of the ADC elections, to press for their demands. However, the agitation was withdrawn after Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma reportedly assured them that their issues would be resolved following discussions at his residence.
“We attended the meeting and discussed all our concerns. The minister assured us that the demands would be addressed at the earliest. However, nearly three months have passed and none of the promises have been fulfilled,” Amrit Reang alleged.
Highlighting their demands, he claimed that although Rs 45 crore had been earmarked for the rehabilitation of surrendered militants, only Rs 23 crore had so far been utilised, while the remaining Rs 22 crore was yet to be sanctioned.
He also alleged that monthly stipends meant for surrendered militants had remained unpaid for a prolonged period. The association has demanded immediate release of pending stipends along with arrears, speedy implementation of rehabilitation packages, and provision of housing and other basic facilities.
Amrit Reang warned that if the demands are not met by May 29, the association would be compelled to launch a statewide movement involving road blockades, picketing in front of government offices, and other protest programmes. FD JK
