Supreme Court to Hear Petitions Challenging Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 on April 16

The Supreme Court of India is scheduled to hear a series of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, on April 16. The matter will be taken up by a bench headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, along with Justices Sanjay Kumar and KV Vishwanathan.
The Centre, anticipating legal challenges, has filed a caveat in the Supreme Court to ensure that no ex-parte orders are passed in the case. A caveat is a legal notice submitted by a party to inform the court that no decision should be taken without hearing their side.
The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, which came into effect on Tuesday, has stirred legal and public debates across the country. President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the legislation earlier this week, following which the government issued a formal notification bringing the Act into force.
Several petitioners have approached the apex court, raising questions over the constitutional and legal aspects of the amendment. The exact nature of the amendments and the implications they might have on existing Waqf properties and administration are expected to be at the heart of the legal challenge.
The upcoming hearing is expected to be closely watched, as it could have significant ramifications for the governance and management of Waqf properties across the country.
