Agartala, May 22 (FD) In a significant move affecting higher educational institutions across the state, the Tripura government has withdrawn the scheduled 26-day summer vacation for all state-run colleges, including technical and professional institutions, officials said on Friday.
The summer break was earlier scheduled to commence from May 26. However, the Higher Education Department has decided to keep all colleges operational in view of ongoing academic and administrative requirements.
In an official notification, Director of Higher Education Animesh Debbarma stated that the decision was taken in the interest of students and to ensure the smooth continuation of academic activities.
“In the interest of the students, summer vacation for 26 days for all colleges, technical and professional institutions under the department’s control, scheduled from May 26, is hereby withdrawn,” the notification said.
According to the order, colleges will remain open during the period to carry out important academic and administrative activities, including the admission process for the 2026–27 academic session, conduct of even semester examinations and other institutional works.
The notification further clarified that faculty members and non-teaching staff working during the withdrawn vacation period would be granted 26 days of Earned Leave in lieu of the cancelled break.
Officials of the Higher Education Department said the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) in Tripura is one of the primary reasons behind the move. With colleges now functioning under a semester-based academic structure, authorities noted that there is limited scope for extended summer vacations.
“This is one of the major reasons for the cancellation of summer vacation,” Debbarma said.
Tripura currently has 22 state-run general degree colleges besides several technical and professional institutions functioning under the Higher Education Department. FD JK
