Agartala, Aug 30 (FD) Dhalai District Hospital in Kulai has achieved a milestone by successfully conducting complex surgeries and providing treatment services for various previously incurable diseases.
On August 28, the hospital's orthopedic team, led by expert surgeons, successfully performed an interlocking nailing (ILN) surgery on the femur of a patient who had suffered a severe fracture below the hip. The surgery was made possible using advanced equipment, including a C-arm machine.
The patient, Benu Munda, 30, a resident of the Panboa area in Kamalpur, sustained the injury on July 21 while crossing a wooden bridge on a bicycle. The bridge, in disrepair, caused him to lose balance and fall, resulting in a fractured tibia in his left leg. He was quickly rescued and brought to the emergency department of Dhalai District Hospital, where he received first aid before being admitted for further treatment.
Upon reviewing the X-ray report, the hospital’s doctors discovered that Benu's leg bone had been broken into two pieces. He was immediately transferred to the orthopedic department, where Dr. Rajkumar Debbarma, a specialist orthopedic surgeon, recommended surgery to repair the fracture.
However, Benu faced financial difficulties and had no family members with him at the hospital. Lacking the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Jan Arogya Yojana card, he was unable to afford the surgery's ancillary costs, which delayed the procedure. In light of his situation, the hospital authorities made a General Diary (GD) entry at the local police station to document his case.
In a remarkable show of compassion, Dr. Rajkumar Debbarma and Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Arup Das volunteered to cover the entire cost of Benu's surgery. The situation became even more critical when it was discovered that Benu needed A-positive blood for the operation, but the hospital's blood bank was out of stock. Fortunately, local donor Abhijit Debnath, a member of the nearby Yuba Sangh club, stepped forward to donate the necessary blood.
With all the necessary arrangements in place, the surgical team proceeded with the operation on August 28. Led by Dr. Rajkumar Debbarma, the team included Anesthesiologist Dr. Mahasweta Das, OT Technicians Shatrupa Dev, Soma Debbarma, and Shatrupa Acharya, along with plaster technician Dukhirai Debbarma and non-health workers Tapan Namashudra and Sima Biswas. Together, they successfully performed the ILN surgery, stabilizing the broken femur with precision.
Benu is now recovering well under the careful observation of the medical team at Dhalai District Hospital. The successful surgery, which was performed free of charge thanks to the generosity of the doctors, highlights the hospital’s commitment to providing quality healthcare to all, regardless of financial circumstances.
