Agartala, Sep 8 (FD) National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST), Govt. of India, New Delhi in association with Tripura University celebrated unsung tribal heroes of Indian freedom struggle in a grand way in the MBB auditorium of the University on Thursday.
This programme was part of initiatives taken up by NCST at the national level to raise awareness about the invaluable contribution of Tribal leaders while the county celebrates 75th years of independence. The NCST has collaborated with more than hundred Universities across the country for this purpose.
The key note speaker of the programme, Kedar A Kulkarni, Coordinator, NCST, North East zone remembered the sacrifices of various tribal leaders of North East and talked about the collective resistance of tribal communities against British imperialism.
RampadaJamatia, Minister of Tribal Affairs, Govt. of Tripura highlighted the systemic inhalation of northeastern cultural values under the British Raj. A. Nayak, Member, NCSTtalked about the need of upholding the holistic culture of tribal communities at the national level. K. Tauthang, JS, NCSTalso graced the occasion and shared information about NCST activities. While addressing theprogramme, the dignitaries stressed on the need of changing the narrative of tribal research in the country and to make it more development centric rather than ethnological.
Prof. Ganga Prasad Prasain, Vice-Chancellor, Tripura University stated that the contribution of tribal communities in country’s history has not been properly reflected in academics. He further stated that the University is gearing up to restructure the syllabus and initiate new research as a measure of course correction.
Representatives of the Kalyan Ashram, Tripura have also participated in the programme along with university students and scholars. The programme was moderated by Dr. Milan Rani Jamatia, Dept. of Hindi, Tripura University.
