Agartala, May 1 (FD) At least two persons, including a five-year-old child, lost their lives and four others sustained injuries in storm-related incidents across Tripura over the past 48 hours, officials said on Friday. The severe weather also left a trail of destruction, damaging nearly 4,000 houses across the state.
The storms, accompanied by heavy rainfall and gusty winds, caused widespread damage to residential structures, standing crops, and power infrastructure in multiple districts.
State Project Director of Disaster Management, S.K. Das, said a five-year-old child was killed and his brother injured when their mud house collapsed at Radhanagar in Unakoti district on Thursday. In a separate incident, a man from Longtarai Valley in Dhalai district died after being struck by lightning on Wednesday.
Three other individuals were injured in separate storm-related incidents, he added.
Officials reported that of the 4,000 houses affected, around 180 huts were completely destroyed. The state government has released ₹79.59 lakh as interim relief to support the affected families.
To provide immediate assistance, four relief camps were set up, sheltering approximately 243 families. Authorities confirmed that all displaced residents have since returned to their homes as conditions improved.
The storms also caused significant disruption to electricity supply, with 129 electric poles reported damaged. Restoration work is currently underway, particularly in remote and inaccessible areas.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Sepahijala and South Tripura districts on Friday, prompting authorities to remain on alert. FD JK
