Agartala, May 9 (FD) After a long wait of three years one of the two Border Haats (markets) along the Indo-Bangla international border in Tripura’s South district resumed its operation today with participation of local traders and common people from both sides of the border, official sources said.
Srinagar – Madhugram border haat, or the border market started its operation in presence of the Additional District Magistrate and Collector of South Tripura district, Dhanbabu Reang and Bangladesh's Feni District's Additional District Magistrate Abhishek Das.
The border haat was closed about three years ago after the COVID 19 induced pandemic started, officials said.
Official sources said, the 'Border Haat' would function on each Tuesday and 27 vendors including women from each side of the border and 1200 people each from India and Bangladesh would be allowed to enter into the 'Border Haat' after verifying their government identity cards," Reang told the media.
Officials of the Tripura Industries and Commerce Department, which looks after the issues related to border haat said the decision to reopen the border haat was taken in a meeting between the district officials of the South Tripura district and neighbouring Feni district of Bangladesh recently.
Tripura has another border haat at Kamalasagar in Sipahijala district bordering Brahmanbaria district of Bangladesh, which is also likely to resume soon as the talks between the officials of the two countries have started.
The border haat or the border markets are situated in two sides of the border, where the local traders and local people can sell or buy their products under the strict vigilance of the border guards of the two countries and valid identity cards also need to be furnished in the entry gates of the border haats.
