On the occasion of Unduwap Poya Day, the High Commission of India in Sri Lanka organised an exhibition on India’s Rich Buddhist Heritage at the historic Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi temple complex in Anuradhapura.
Unduvap Poya Day marks the arrival of Arhath Sangamitta Theri, the daughter of Emperor Asoka, in Sri Lanka. Sanghamitta brought with her a sapling which stands today at Anuradhapura as the Jaya Sri Mahabodhi. The sapling is believed to be a cutting from the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi, the tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. The event highlights the enduring spiritual and cultural ties between India and Sri Lanka.
The exhibition features photographs depicting key episodes from Lord Buddha’s life and prominent Buddhist pilgrimage sites in India. Part of a mobile initiative by the High Commission of India, it has been showcased at Buddhist temples across Sri Lanka on every Poya day this year.
