Agartala, Apr 8 (FD) In order to meet the acute crisis of blood in various blood banks, Spandan, a non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Tripura on Saturday held a voluntarily blood donation camp at Agartala Press Club.
Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha and AMC Mayor Dipak Majumder visited the blood donation camp and encouraged the donors in the morning.
The chief minister and the Mayor appreciated the initiative taken by the ‘Spandan’ social organization in organizing the camp.
However, while speaking on the occasion, the doctor administering the camp said that the large volume of blood donation could create preservation problems.
"A unit of blood collected in a camp can retain its effectiveness for a maximum of three months or ninety days and after that the blood collected becomes unusable", said the doctor.
It seems that instead of rushing to organize blood donation camps, he insists that it would be better if the organizers do so in consultation with government and privately run blood banks in the state.
Secretary of the NGO, Heimanti Bhattacharya said that the organization started its social service journey in 1990 with alumni of Netaji Subhash Vidyaniketan.
Altogether 78 persons including women and students donated blood in the camp. FD PD
