In South Korea, the opposition parties today raised a motion to impeach acting President Choi Sang-mok, escalating the country’s ongoing political turmoil. The Democratic Party, which holds a parliamentary majority, accused Mr. Choi of repeatedly vetoing bills and blocking the appointment of a liberal-leaning Constitutional Court judge.
Mr. Choi, also the finance minister, took over after President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached for declaring martial law in December. The Constitutional Court is currently reviewing Yoon’s case, with a ruling expected soon. If Mr. Choi is removed, a new election must be held within 60 days.
Meanwhile, opposition parties also impeached Prime Minister Han Duck-soo after he became acting president. The Constitutional Court is due to rule on his impeachment on Monday; if it is struck down, that would mean Mr. Han would return and replace Mr. Choi as acting President.
