Agartala, Apr 16 (FD) In a decisive administrative action, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Sonamura has issued a stern warning to 22 temple committees, directing them to relocate religious structures built on government land. The directive was announced during an urgent meeting held on March 19 at the Conference Hall of the newly established SDM Office Complex.
The meeting brought together presidents and secretaries of various temple committees from across the subdivision. During the discussion, the SDM made it clear that unauthorized occupation of government land, even for religious purposes, would not be tolerated. Committees were instructed to voluntarily relocate their structures at the earliest to avoid strict legal and administrative consequences.
Among the temples identified are those located near Sarojini Market, Hospital Road, Kamal Nagar Market, Sukanta Palli, Dak Bungalow area, and several rural pockets including Barkhala, Bhagirchar, Bankumari, Nirvoypur, Kalikhala, and Rangamura. Many of these structures have reportedly existed for years, raising concerns over long-standing encroachments on public land.
To ensure effective enforcement, the SDM has directed all Tehsildars to submit updated lists of such religious structures along with photographic documentation. This step indicates that the administration is preparing for a systematic survey followed by possible eviction drives if necessary.
Officials stated that the initiative is part of a broader policy to reclaim government land and ensure lawful land use across the subdivision. Authorities also emphasized maintaining public order while handling the sensitive nature of religious structures.
The move has triggered widespread attention in Tripura, with further developments expected depending on the response of the temple committees in the coming days. FD SB
