Agartala, June 7 (FD) In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, a notorious smuggler named Samsuddin was apprehended by the police in the Kaliganj area of Karimganj district, located in the neighbouring Barak Valley district of Assam.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team from Kaliganj police station pursued a speeding auto rickshaw and successfully intercepted it in Ratanpur village during a late-night operation.
During the search operation, law enforcement officials discovered a substantial cache of addictive Yaba tablets valued at a staggering Rs 20 lakh. The seized tablets weighed approximately 1.5 kilogrammes.
Furthermore, the authorities apprehended Samsuddin, the owner of the illicit consignment, and also detained the autorickshaw used for transportation.
The Assam Police Deputy Superintendent, Gitartha Sharma, confirmed that both Samsuddin and the autorickshaw driver would be charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The accused are scheduled to appear in court today, where the police will seek remand for further investigation.
In a separate incident, the Ambassa police station in Tripura achieved a significant breakthrough by seizing a large consignment of cannabis, commonly known as 'ganja.'
Approximately 897 kilogrammes of the contraband, valued at Rs 2 crore, were recovered. Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the seizure, and they will face legal consequences for their involvement.
These successful operations signify the commitment of law enforcement agencies to curbing the illegal drug trade and protecting society from the harmful effects of such substances.
The collaborative efforts between the Assam and Tripura police highlight the importance of cross-border cooperation in combating organised crime and maintaining regional security. FD JK
