Maligaon, Jan 30 (FD) Indian Railways has accorded approval for six important new line projects under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), marking a major step towards strengthening railway infrastructure and improving connectivity in North Bengal and North East region. This decision of the Railway Board enables the immediate execution of the works, reflecting the Government’s continued focus on infrastructure led development and regional integration towards railway connectivity.
The approved projects include the Raiganj-Itahar (22.16 km) and Gazole-Itahar (27.20 km) new railway lines. With estimated costs of Rs 129.34 crore and Rs 85.59 crore respectively, these lines will significantly enhance rail connectivity in northern and southern Dinajpur districts and strengthen passenger and freight movement towards the Northeast.
Another key project, the Itahar–Buniadpur new line (27.095 km), has also been taken into account. With an estimated cost of Rs 287.94 crore, this line will connect important trade and population centres through five stations, improving access for rural and semi-urban areas and supporting socio-economic development in the region.
The Railway Board has also approved the Chalsa–Naxal new line (19.85 km) at an estimated cost of Rs 292.92 crore that will play a crucial role in improving connectivity in the Dooars region and further strengthening the railway network.
In addition, the Rajabhatkhawa-Jainti new line (15.13 km) has been considered, passing through the Buxa Tiger Reserve, this project with an estimated cost of Rs 180.16 crore, will be taken forward with due emphasis on sustainable and environmentally responsible construction, while enhancing local mobility and supporting regional economic activity.
The sixth project, the Raiganj-Dalkhola new line (43.43 km), has an estimated cost of Rs 291.53 crore and substantial preliminary works already completed, this line will create a more efficient rail link between Raiganj and Dalkhola, reduce travel time, and provide a boost to freight and passenger movement in the area.
With the approval of these six new line projects, NFR reaffirms its commitment towards expanding railway infrastructure, improving connectivity in Northeast and West Bengal, contributing to balanced regional development. PRESS RELEASE
