Agartala, Mar 8 (FD) Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday met a Tipra Motha delegation led by party supremo and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma at the state guest house here.
It is learnt that TIPRA Motha demanded constitutional solutions for the problems of the estimated 14 lakh tribals of the state, who were reportedly marginalized in the state in uneven competition with the non-tribals, who form two third of the state’s estimated 40 lakh population.
The meeting which is yet to be concluded is also being attended by BJP president J P Nadda and Tripura’s newly sworn in chief minister Manik Saha.
It is learnt, Shah made it clear that the central government would not allow division of the state anyway, but is in favour of empowerment of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTADC), which is the home to tribals and form two third of the state’s geographic areas.
Debbarma, a descendant of the former ruling family of Tripura, had long been seeking a “constitutional solution” to demands by his party for a separate state of Tiprasa. The Tipra Motha recently won 13 seats in elections to the 60-member Tripura state assembly.
A six-member delegation of TIPRA Motha is believed to meet Shah and J P Nadda.
Meanwhile in a Facebook post in the evening Debbarma wrote, “The Home Minister has started the process for a constitutional solution for the indigenous people of Tripura. An interlocutor for this process will be appointed and this will be within a specific time frame. I thank the Home Minister for understanding the genuine problems of the Son of the soil. We successfully got our Bru people rehabilitation in our state after 23 years by signing the Bru accord and today we have started a huge dialogue to ensure that our survival and existence are protected”.
