Agartala, July 26 (FD) Serious allegations of sexual harassment, abuse of authority, and attempts to suppress complaints have surfaced at the National Law University Tripura (NLUT), prompting concern within academic and legal circles. According to the complainants, the matter has now reached the Tripura State Human Rights Commission (TSHRC), which has reportedly initiated an inquiry into the allegations.
According to sources, the allegations centre on former Registrar Prof. Nachiketa Mittal, who is stated to have resigned from his position after the complaints surfaced. Complainants have alleged that over an extended period, he sent obscene, sexually explicit, and inappropriate messages to several female students and women employees of the university.
The complaints further allege that academic advantages, including examination marks and other academic benefits, were at times offered as inducements in exchange for sexual favours. It has also been alleged that one PhD scholar suffered severe psychological trauma as a result of the alleged misconduct.
In another instance cited by the complainants, a first-year BA-LLB student reportedly discontinued her studies midway through the course after allegedly being unable to cope with the psychological distress arising from the incidents.
The complainants have further alleged that several victims were discouraged from reporting the alleged misconduct and were warned that pursuing complaints could adversely affect their academic progress and future professional careers.
The role of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Yogesh Pratap Singh has also come under scrutiny. According to the complainants, when some students approached him seeking intervention, they were allegedly advised to remain silent rather than being provided immediate institutional support or redressal. They have also alleged that the functioning of the university's Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) was interfered with, affecting the normal course of the inquiry.
The allegations have not been independently verified, and no official response from Prof. Mittal, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Singh, or the university administration was immediately available at the time of filing this report. The outcome of the reported inquiry by the Tripura State Human Rights Commission is awaited. FD JK
