Senior Photojournalist Assaulted at Agartala Petrol Pump, Journalists Demand Arrest

Agartala, May 16 (FD) Senior photojournalist Bijoy Debnath was allegedly assaulted by an auto-rickshaw driver at the Radhanagar petrol pump in Agartala on Friday morning following an altercation over violation of a fuel queue.
According to reports, the incident occurred when an auto-rickshaw allegedly attempted to break a long queue of vehicles waiting for refuelling at the petrol pump. When people standing in the queue protested, the driver reportedly misbehaved with them. Bijoy Debnath, who was present at the spot, also objected to the driver’s behaviour.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the auto driver suddenly attacked the journalist with a helmet, causing serious injuries to his head and face. The accused reportedly fled from the spot immediately after the assault.
Local people rushed the injured journalist to GBP Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment. A complaint has been lodged at the East Agartala Police Station, though no arrest had been reported till the filing of this report.
The incident triggered sharp reactions from journalists’ organisations across the state. The Assembly of Journalists and the Agartala Press Club strongly condemned the attack and demanded immediate arrest and strict punishment for the accused.
AOJ General Secretary Shanit Debroy termed the assault a serious attack on democratic values and freedom of expression, stating that journalists often face risks while protesting against unethical activities.
Agartala Press Club Secretary Ramakanta De also urged the police administration to take swift legal action and ensure exemplary punishment for the accused.
The incident has raised renewed concerns over the safety of media professionals while performing their duties in public spaces. FD JK
