Agartala, Oct 4 (FD) A massive search operation has been launched in Tripura after ten Bangladeshi nationals, including a minor, escaped from a detention centre at Narsinghgarh in West Tripura district on September 29, officials confirmed on Saturday.
The detainees, lodged at the centre pending deportation, managed to flee as arrangements were being made to send them back to Bangladesh.
“All 10 Bangladesh nationals, including a minor, escaped on September 29,” police spokesperson Rajdeep Deb said.
Authorities have registered a case and intensified search operations to track down the escapees. “Security has also been beefed up around the detention centre to prevent any further incidents,” Deb added.
The escape has raised serious concerns about security lapses in detention facilities; coming just days after six inmates broke out from Dharmanagar sub-jail in North Tripura on October 1. Two of those escapees were later re-arrested, while a manhunt continues for the remaining four.
Illegal immigration has long been a sensitive issue in Tripura, which shares an 856-km-long international border with Bangladesh. Security agencies frequently report the arrest of undocumented migrants attempting to cross into the state. The latest incident has once again put a spotlight on the challenges faced by authorities in managing border security, detention, and deportation processes.
Meanwhile, after six inmates escaped from the Dharmanagar sub-jail in North Tripura district, five jail department officers were suspended, officials said. FD JK
