Agartala, Jun 16 (FD) Leader of the opposition and prominent leader of TIPRA Motha on Thursday criticized the police action on Tripura Indigenous Students Federation (TISF) during their march to Governor’s house to press for introduction of Roman script in Kokbarak, the lingua franca of the indigenous people of the state.
The TISF, the student wing of the Opposition TIPRA Motha Party, organized a rally in support of introducing the Roman script for writing Kokbarok, in the CBSE curriculum.
However, the peaceful demonstration took a violent turn as scuffles broke out between TISF activists and the police during their march towards the Governor's house.
The TISF activists have been advocating for the use of the Roman script in CBSE schools, as it is challenging for indigenous students to write Kokbarok in the Bengali script.
However, tensions escalated during the rally when a scuffle broke out between the demonstrators and the police as they marched towards the Governor's house.
Police initially tried to stop the rally by erecting barricades, but tensions escalated, leading to tear gas and water cannons being deployed to disperse the demonstrators. Several students sustained injuries in the incident and were admitted to the GB Hospital for treatment.
The demonstrators strongly condemned the police's actions and called for Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who also serves as the Home Department portfolio, to intervene in the matter.
Opposition leader Animesh Debbarma and ADC CEM Purnachandra Jamatia visited the hospital to inquire about the injured protesters' well-being.
Debbarma criticized the alleged assault on the "peaceful" demonstrators and questioned the police's use of force without prior warning. He demanded a high-level investigation into the incident and urged the government to take strict action against those responsible. Furthermore, Debbarma called for proper medical care to be provided to the injured protestors. FD JK
