Agartala, Aug 20 (FD) Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu on Thursday highlighted the important contribution of pig farming to the state’s rural economy while inaugurating a workshop on modern pig farming techniques at Pragna Bhavan.
During the programme, the Governor visited exhibition stalls showcasing different aspects of pig farming and interacted with participating scientists, farmers and organisers. Addressing the workshop, he said Tripura produces around 59.20 thousand metric tonnes of meat annually, while the state’s people consume nearly 14.15 kg of meat per person each year. A major share of this consumption comes from pork, underlining the importance of pig farming to the rural economy.
Governor Nallu said progressive pig farmers are not merely producers but have emerged as rural entrepreneurs who contribute significantly to the state’s economic development. He stressed the need to promote scientific and modern methods of pig farming to improve productivity and increase the income of animal rearers.
The Governor said the state government is committed to creating a favourable environment for animal husbandry by facilitating modern technology, scientific knowledge, financial assistance and better coordination among stakeholders. The government aims to increase productivity, raise farmers’ incomes, generate employment and establish pig farming as a profitable and sustainable livelihood.
He also highlighted various initiatives being implemented by the Animal Resources Development Department to promote animal husbandry-based economic growth. Appreciating progressive animal rearers for adopting new technologies, he expressed hope that the workshop would further strengthen scientific practices in the sector.
Speaking at the event, Tripura Animal Resources Development Minister Sudhangshu Das highlighted several welfare schemes being implemented for animal rearers. He encouraged people to adopt scientific pig farming methods and develop it as a sustainable source of livelihood.
The workshop, titled “Empowering Progressive Pig Farmers through Innovative and Scientific Technologies on Pig Farming,” was jointly organised by the Animal Resources Development Department, the All India Co-ordinated Research Project and the National Livestock Mission.
An exhibition was organised on various aspects of pig farming, while a documentary on modern pig farming was also screened. Ten successful pig farmers were felicitated during the programme, with the Governor congratulating them for their achievements.
Experts at the workshop discussed pig health and disease prevention, scientific reproduction, feed management, farm management and marketing strategies. Secretary of the Animal Resources Development Department S. Prabhu delivered the welcome address, while Director Dr. N. K. Chanchal proposed the vote of thanks. FD SB
