The death toll from the tragic roof collapse at a popular nightclub in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, has climbed to 221, officials confirmed. The incident occurred Tuesday night during a packed live performance by renowned 69-year-old merengue singer Rubby Perez, who was among those found dead in the wreckage.
Authorities said search and recovery operations have now ended. The government has authorized the formation of a special investigative team comprising national and international experts to determine the exact cause of the structural failure.
The collapse took place in the middle of the concert, with hundreds of attendees—including politicians, athletes, and other public figures—trapped inside. The force of the collapse flattened a significant portion of the building, causing panic and chaos as emergency crews rushed to rescue survivors.
Officials stated that initial reports suggest poor maintenance and possible overcapacity may have contributed to the disaster. President Luis Abinader expressed deep sorrow and vowed a full investigation, promising justice for the victims.
"This is a national tragedy. We will uncover the truth," said Interior Minister Jesús Vásquez Martínez.
Funeral arrangements are already underway as the country mourns the loss of lives in one of its worst peacetime disasters. Flags will fly at half-mast for three days in honor of the victims.
