Agartala, May 3 (FD) In the aftermath of last month’s ADC poll victory, sections of local leadership and some unruly workers of Tipra Motha have allegedly begun acting with a sense of impunity, raising concerns over adherence to the rule of law.
The situation came to light in the Killa area under Udaipur subdivision, where a group of Tipra Motha supporters enforced a road blockade for two consecutive days. The protest was triggered by the arrest of a party leader accused of assaulting several tribal youths at a Village Committee office. Tension, however, subsided after the accused was granted bail by a court on Friday.
According to police sources, on April 23, local residents Malindra Jamatya, Bishwa Ranjan Jamatya and a few others had gone to the Village Committee office in Killa for official work. An altercation reportedly broke out when a group of Tipra Motha workers present there confronted them over their alleged support for the Bharatiya Janata Party during the ADC election campaign. The situation escalated, and the visitors were allegedly assaulted.
Following the incident, the victims lodged an FIR at Killa police station. Acting on the complaint, police arrested local Tipra Motha youth leader Hiron Jamatya from the Tairupa area on the night of April 30.
In protest against his arrest, a large group of supporters staged road blockades across Raiabari, Dewanbari, Khupilong and Noabari from the morning of May 12, demanding his immediate release. Police initially informed the protesters that the accused had been remanded to four days of judicial custody.
Subsequently, police moved the court, and the Udaipur magistrate’s court granted bail to Hiron Jamatya, directing him to report to the police daily. The court also made it clear that legal proceedings in the case will continue. FD JK
