Agartala, Mar 13 (FD) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched various schemes for women’s empowerment since assuming office. To take the country forward, women must be given the utmost respect. Scheduled Caste Welfare Minister Sudhanshu Das emphasized this while inaugurating the International Women’s Day celebration at the Nazrul Art Center in Kumarghat, organized by the Kumarghat Panchayat Samiti. Before the event began, a grand procession passed through various streets, including the Fatikroy market.
This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is "Accelerating Rights, Equality, and Empowerment for All Women and Girls." In his speech, Minister Sudhanshu Das highlighted the immense significance of this event in honoring women. The primary goal of celebrating International Women’s Day is to recognize the contributions of women in society. He stated that half of all creations in the world are shaped by women. Considering the needs of women, the Narendra Modi-led central government introduced the Swachh Bharat (Clean India) Mission, constructing nearly 110 million household toilets. The Ujjwala Yojana was also launched to provide free cooking gas connections to women.
Following this initiative, the state government has also undertaken various programs for women's self-respect and empowerment since 2018. Women in the state receive a 3% reduction in registration fees when registering land in their names. Additionally, two TSR (Tripura State Rifles) battalions exclusively for women have been established. The state government has implemented a 33% reservation for women in all government jobs. Presently, 52,600 self-help groups have been formed, involving around 526,000 women in economic activities. Many women have engaged in economic initiatives through roles such as Matsya Sakhis (Fisheries Guides), Bank Sakhis (Banking Guides), and Krishi Sakhis (Agricultural Guides).
To mark the government’s two-year anniversary, two additional schemes have been launched specifically for girls and women. Furthermore, in certain schemes under the Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Department, women entrepreneurs receive subsidies of up to 60%. The goal is to encourage women to advance in various sectors.
Speaking at the event, Unakoti Zilla Parishad Chairman Amlendu Das highlighted the government's focus on financial development, self-respect, and women’s empowerment. Sub-divisional Magistrate N. S. Chakma, Dr. Subrata Sharma (Acting Principal of Ambedkar College), Kumarghat Panchayat Samiti Vice-Chairman Shankar Dev, and social worker Nilkantha Sinha also addressed the gathering. The welcome speech was delivered by BDO Dr. Sudip Bhaumik.
