Agartala, May 24 (FD) Prominent businessman and entrepreneur Ratan Saha, elder brother of Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, has been elected as the new interim president of the Eastern India Motion Pictures Association (EIMPA), a key body overseeing film production and studio-related activities in Kolkata’s Tollygunge film industry.
Ratan Saha was elected through a voice vote and will serve as interim president until a full-fledged election is conducted. The development follows recent changes in the association’s leadership dynamics after former West Bengal minister Arup Biswas, who had long wielded significant influence over Tollygunge affairs, reportedly lost his hold over the organisation amid controversies and allegations of corruption and extortion.
Sources said Ratan Saha has longstanding involvement in the film industry as a reputed film producer and founder of SSR Cinema Chains, which operates multiple cinema halls in Kolkata and Agartala.
His election has been welcomed and celebrated in Agartala, his hometown. The announcement of his elevation to the prestigious position was made by his son, Sandeep Saha.
Reports indicate that the meeting witnessed some disruption after former EIMPA president Piya Sengupta, reportedly associated with the Trinamool camp, raised objections over the proceedings and the participation of certain alleged non-members before walking out of the meeting.
Following her exit, the meeting resumed in the presence of police personnel, after which members present unanimously elected Ratan Saha as the interim president of the association. FD JK
