Agartala, Aug 26 (FD) Tension prevailed high at Ranirbazar area, about 20 km from here when at least 12 houses and 13 vehicles were set on fire by unidentified miscreants after an idol in a Kali temple was spoiled, police said on Monday. The incidents occurred last night.
Security was beefed up in the area and patrolling by police and paramilitary forces intensified so that no further untoward incident could take place, police said.
Assistant Inspector General (Law and Order) Ananta Das said, at least 12 residences and 13 vehicles, including motor cycles and small pick up vans were set ablaze by unidentified miscreants on Sunday night after an idol of Kali was found defaced in a makeshift temple.
He said, after the attacks in the house of the people belonging to the minority communities, they fled the area and took shelter elsewhere.
Top police officials including DG, intelligence, Anurag Dhyankar and West Tripura district police chief Kiran Kumar visited the area.
Police has suo motu registered a case ad investigation is on.
Tripura State Jamiat Ulemae Hind has condemned both incidents and urged the peace loving people of the state to maintain calm. President of the organization, Mufti Taiabur Rahaman condemned both the incidents.
“While the people and the government of Tripura as a whole are preoccupied with the flood situation, such incidents are anti-human. All are requested to maintain peace and harmony in the state and locality irrespective of any religion”, he told reporters.
He also demanded that the perpetrators of both the incidents should be identified and given exemplary punishment. He also requested the state government to provide suitable compensation to the victims after investigation.
Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma also expressed concern over the incident and appealed to everyone to maintain law and order.
"Last night incident in Ranirbazar Kaiturbari area is a worrying sign with reports of communal clashes. I appeal to those who are responsible for maintaining law and order to follow the rule of law," he wrote on Facebook.
"When our state is reeling under a natural disaster and so much of stress is there, some elements are only playing religious politics. Miscreants regardless of their faith must be dealt with firmly -- law has to be neutral to all. I ask for Tripura to unite in these tough times and not fight with each other," he added. FD JK
