Rajib Bhattacharjee Defends Speaker’s Action Against Sudip Roy Barman

Agartala, Sept 1 (FD) Tripura BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee on Tuesday defended the Speaker’s decision to expel opposition MLA Sudip Roy Barman from the Tripura Legislative Assembly chamber, asserting that rules, decorum and discipline must be maintained during House proceedings.

Addressing a press conference at the BJP state office, Bhattacharjee said the decisions of the Assembly Speaker and the established rules governing the House should be respected. His remarks came a day after Roy Barman was expelled from the Assembly chamber following a heated situation during the proceedings.

Bhattacharjee also launched a sharp attack on CPI(M) State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury and former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar over remarks made by them at different public meetings. He described some of their comments as “distasteful” and politically inappropriate.

While acknowledging that political differences were natural in a democracy, the BJP leader said such differences should not result in personal attacks or contribute to the deterioration of political discourse.

On speculation regarding a possible political understanding between the BJP and Tipra Motha, Bhattacharjee categorically stated that no discussions had taken place between the two parties on the matter so far. He said reports and speculation suggesting that talks were underway had no basis at present.

Bhattacharjee said the BJP remained committed to maintaining discipline and decorum in the legislature while continuing its political activities within the framework of democratic norms.

The press conference came amid heightened political exchanges following the recent developments in the Tripura Legislative Assembly and criticism from opposition parties over the handling of House proceedings. Bhattacharjee used the occasion to reiterate the BJP’s position on the Speaker’s action, the statements made by opposition leaders and speculation surrounding the party’s political equation with Tipra Motha.
