President Droupadi Murmu has said that it is a matter of pride that India is the world’s largest, diverse, young, inclusive and sensitive democracy. Addressing the 15th National Voters’ Day programme in New Delhi this afternoon, President Murmu said, that India is the mother of democracy and that the democratic process in the country existed since ancient times. She said India’s democracy is a unique example for the modern world.
The President said that the impressive glimpse of inclusive democracy is visible in elections. The increasing participation of women in elections is an important sign of the overall development of the society and country. She noted that the Election Commission has made special efforts to facilitate the voting process for senior voters above 85 years of age, differently-abled voters and tribal voters living in remote areas. President Murmu said, in this way, the Election Commission has set a good example of inclusive and sensitive election management. She said that the ideals and responsibilities associated with voting are the main dimensions of democracy. The Voters’ Pledge issued by the Election Commission can guide all citizens. The President stated that along with full faith in democracy, voters should also have the firm resolve that they will exercise their right to vote by rising above all kinds of narrow-mindedness, discrimination and temptation. Enlightened voters strengthen the democracy.
Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal lauded the efforts of the Election Commission for conducting elections in a peaceful and impartial manner.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said, the number of voters in India now stands at over 99 crore and the country will soon create a new record of one billion-plus voters.
During the event, President Murmu presented the Best Electoral Practices Awards to state and district officials for their exemplary efforts in ensuring smooth elections. Special recognition was given to initiatives that increased voter participation, such as innovative outreach campaigns and the use of technology. Doordarshan was awarded for its innovative programmes generating awareness on voting. Director General of Doordarshan, Kanchan Prasad received the award.
The function was also attended by heads and representatives of Election Management bodies, who deliberated on major issues faced in election management around the world during a two-day conference that concluded yesterday.
This year’s theme of National Voters’ Day is, ‘Nothing Like Voting, I Vote for Sure. It is a continuation of last year’s theme emphasizing the importance of participation in the electoral process and encouraging voters to take pride in exercising their franchise.
