Agartala, Sept 19 (FD) Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma has indicated that he may step away from active political positions, saying he wants to remain directly connected with the people of Tripura and speak more freely on issues affecting them.
In a video message posted on social media, Debbarma said holding a formal party position sometimes made it difficult to balance organisational interests with those of the people. Stepping away, he said, would allow him to speak more openly against wrongdoing, including mistakes by political leaders.
“I will stay in Tripura and stand by the people,” Debbarma said.
He said a plenary session of Tipra Motha would be convened next month after the Village Committee elections to discuss the party’s future course, including his political role.
His remarks come amid ongoing discussions over the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord, which has remained a key issue in his engagement with the BJP and the Centre.
Debbarma also expressed disappointment over developments within Tipra Motha, the party he founded. Referring to allegations of corruption and administrative irregularities in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), he said his efforts to bring about changes had not produced the desired results.
He said these developments had also affected his image as the face of the party.
Debbarma maintained that he entered politics to work for the people rather than for personal financial gain, recalling his experiences with tribal communities during his association with the Congress.
“Tipra Motha is not the source of my power,” he said, adding that he would continue to remain the ‘Bubagra’ (king) whom people trust and love.
He stressed that relinquishing a formal political position would not mean withdrawing from public life. Instead, he said, his method of working would change while his commitment to safeguarding the interests of Tripura’s people would remain unchanged. FD JK
