Agartala, Apr 20 (FD) Tensions escalated in Tripura following a series of arrests and protests linked to violence during and after the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council elections 2026. Authorities confirmed that three individuals were taken into custody for their alleged involvement in an attack on Abhishek Debroy earlier this month.
According to officials, the incident occurred on April 12 in Gomati district when the MLA’s convoy was reportedly ambushed near Tulamura under the Matabari area. The attackers allegedly targeted the vehicle twice, causing damage while the driver attempted to move the legislator to safety. Police later identified the suspects as individuals linked to the Tipra Motha Party, though investigations are ongoing to determine broader involvement.
In a separate development, law enforcement in Khowai detained three more party workers over alleged post-poll unrest. The arrests triggered widespread protests, with supporters blocking a major highway and demanding the unconditional release of those detained. The blockade disrupted daily life for hours, leaving commuters stranded.
Despite appeals from police officials, demonstrators initially refused to withdraw. However, the agitation was temporarily called off later in the evening, with party leaders indicating that further action may follow after the Garia Puja. Authorities have registered multiple cases and continue legal proceedings as the situation remains sensitive. FD SB
