Post poll violence in Tripura: 8 injured, violence continuesdespite CM’s appeal

Agartala, Mar 04 (FD) Even as the Feb 16 Elections in Tripuraand subsequent counting of votes remained peaceful sporadic incidents of postpoll violence were reported from different parts of the state, specially fromBishramganj in Sepahijala and Khowai districts since Thursday last. Assistant InspectorGeneral of Police (AIG), Law and Order, Jyotishman Das Chowdhury said, “So farfive specific FIRs have been registered from Sepahijla, Khowai, Unakoti andWest Tripura districts in connection with post poll violence and eight peoplewere grievously injured. Over twenty miscreants were arrested for their allegedinvolvement in these clashes.”Around 70 such incidents have been reported across the statesince the election results were announced, he added.Meanwhile, Officiating Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha visited the GBP hospital to interact and inquire about the conditions of the injuredpersons on Friday. He asked the police to take stern action against themiscreants in order to maintain peace and tranquility.
However, no death is reported from any part of the state so far, the policeofficial said.
All the police stations have been alerted following post poll violence, the AIGsaid, adding that the police are working in coordination with the localadministration to maintain peace.In a Facebook post the Sepahijala district police said, “Arumour is being circulated that ethnic tension has developed in some parts ofBLG subdivision where tribal and Bengali communities are attacking each other.This information is absolutely false and manufactured. No such incident hashappened. Situation is normal and completely peaceful. Strict action will betaken against rumour mongers.”
Earlier on Friday in a Facebook post the police said "Some elements aretrying to disturb the peace in the state by spreading rumours of clash andattacks. It is informed that so far no untoward incident has been reported.Police are actively patrolling in all sensitive areas. People are requested notto fall prey to these rumours. In case of any emergency, please contact yournearest police station".
In another post on Friday the police said, “Today afternoonAirport PS received an information regarding recovery of one bomb at GhoshPara,Gandhigram, immediately police and BDDS team visited the place andrecovered one bomb like substance in front of the house of Babul Ghosh but BombSquad clarified that there was no any explosive substance in it.The BJP-IPFT government returned to power in the state forthe second consecutive term as the BJP bagged 32 seats in the 60-memberAssembly while its alliance partner IPFT got one seat.
