Agartala, Apr 21 (FD) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday termed the recent post-election violence in the state as a “disease” akin to “cancer”, asserting that the government would take all necessary steps to curb it and ensure that those responsible are not spared.
After visiting violence-affected areas in Khowai district and interacting with displaced families, Dr. Saha said the administration would adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards any form of unrest.
“We cannot allow this. This is like cancer. Cancer has no easy answer, but sometimes it needs surgery. This is a disease, and whatever medicine is needed, we will provide. Nobody will be spared,” he said.
Violent incidents, including arson, assault and intimidation, have been reported from parts of West Tripura, South Tripura and Khowai districts following the declaration of the TTAADC election results on April 17.
The Chief Minister said a high-level committee was constituted on the day of the results to monitor the situation. “Even while I was in West Bengal for election campaigning on April 18, I was closely monitoring developments,” he said, adding that he would chair a high-level review meeting on law and order later in the day with the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police.
Dr. Saha also alleged that such incidents have a historical pattern. “This is not new. Such things have been happening since the 1970s. Congress and CPI(M) did it earlier, and now Tipra Motha is doing it,” he said.
During his visit, the Chief Minister met nearly 300 displaced persons at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Camp and around 250 others taking shelter in a party office. He assured them of security, financial assistance and rehabilitation support, and said reports of repeated attacks on homes and alleged extortion demands were being taken seriously.
“Arrests have already begun, and more will follow,” he added.
Meanwhile, fresh incidents of violence were reported from Khowai subdivision. Miscreants allegedly vandalised the residence of BJP leader Raj Kumar Debbarma at Kachubari under Champahaor police station. Though the family escaped unhurt, furniture and other belongings were destroyed.
In another incident, a BJP party office at Manu Bankul New Market was set on fire late Monday night, gutting furniture and important documents before fire services brought the blaze under control. Additionally, at least 20 full-grown rubber trees in a plantation owned by BJP youth leader Sushanta Mog alias Manu were reportedly cut down.
Dr. Saha visited the affected areas and met victims, including Debbarma and his family, assuring them that damaged houses would be rebuilt and losses compensated by the government. He condemned the attacks and reiterated that ensuring public safety remains the administration’s top priority. FD JK
