Over 446 Butterfly Species Spotted at Kaziranga National Park, Second Highest in India

Over 446 butterfly species have been spotted at the Kaziranga National Park making it the second highest in the country with the highest number of butterflies . Namdapha National Park in Arunachal Pradesh has the highest butterflies. The long term observation and records are a culmination of years of work put in by Monsoon Jyoti Gogoi, a young scientist native of Kaziranga.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a social media posts extended his best wishes to Mr. Gogoi for his remarkable contributions, which include 18 new butterflies for India, such as the Burmese Threering, Glassy Cerulean, Dark-bordered.
Mr.Gogoi, who has been studying butterflies in the region since 2007, shared that Kaziranga now ranks second in butterfly species diversity among India’s protected areas, after Namdapha National Park. The park authority said that particularly significant given Kaziranga’s location outside the Himalayan and Patkai mountain ranges, making its high species diversity a remarkable achievement.
