Agartala, April 21 (FD) The leaders and political activists of three opposition parties including CPI-M, Congress and the ally of the BJP, Tipra Motha joined hands in organizing a protest meeting at Bishalgarh in Sipahijala district against the amendment of Waqf act on Sunday.
They gathered at the Bishalgarh railway station, where at least 5000 people, mostly from Muslim community and expressed their concern against the Waqf act and they labeled the work at disrupting communal harmony and curbing religious rights of the minorities.
The protest rally was organised under the banner of the Jana Adhikar Sangram Parishad amid a tight security arrangements made by the administration.
The protesters waived national flags and labeled the amended law as a black law, which threatens communal harmony in the country.
The leaders included prominent advocate, Purushottam Roy Burman, former Minister and prominent CPI-M leader Bhanu Lal Saha, President of the Tipra Motha party’s minority cell, Shah Alam and youth Congress activists like Md. Sahajahan Islam and Amir Hossain.
The leaders pointed out two primary concerns including the inclusion of the non Muslims in the board and the abolition of the ‘Waqf by user’.
Advocate Purushottam Roy Burman pointed out that the Waqf properties, which are dedicated to the religious and charitable purpose within the Muslim community.
They pointed out that inclusion of the non Muslim members in the board, which has been historically managed by the Muslims could create a chaos.
They also protested the abolition of the ‘Waqf by user’ provision, which could open the door to disputes over such lands with District Magistrates empowered to designate them as contested properties. FD JK
