Opposition Congress gears up for rural poll

Agartala, July 7 (FD) The opposition Congress in Tripura is gearing up for the forthcoming three-tier panchayat polls slated for August.
President of the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC), Asish Saha said the party has started preparations to attain good results amidst alleged violence by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) cadres.
He said, the party had a meeting to work out the strategy for fighting the elections, which was attended among others Congress president Ashish Kumar Saha, Congress Working Committee (CWC) member and former minister Sudip Roy Barman, party observers, district presidents, and other frontal wing leaders.
Congress president said that they had previously sought the state Election Commission’s approval to introduce an online nomination submission process, but no response was given by the commission.
Saha alleged that 86 percent of opposition candidates could not file nominations in the last panchayat poll by the BJP indulged goons adding no social audit of the panchayats has been conducted in the past three years.
Panchayats elections are likely to be held by the end of July or the first week of August, though the schedule is yet to be finalized, State Election Commissioner S. Chaudhuri said today.
Elections will be held in 6,370 gram panchayat seats, followed by 423 seats in 35 panchayat samitis, and 116 seats in eight zilla parishads. FD JK
