Agartala, Oct 27 (FD) Two repeated incidents of alleged gang rape at Kumarghat in Unakoti district and Kalyanpur in Khowai district have rocked the state and the opposition political parties are upbeat to gain political mileage.
Two people were arrested today in connection with the gang rape of a 13-year old girl allegedly by three persons at Khas Kalyanpur in Khowai district, Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Prasun Tripura said.
He said the girl was moving with her two friends in the area on the occasion of Diwali on Tuesday night, when a group of youths assaulted the two youths accompanying the girl at about 9-30 pm and forced them to flee and then picked up the girl and gang raped her in an abandoned house.
Next day the girl with her all ails managed to reach home and told her experience of horror to her parents, who immediately registered an FIR with Kalyanpur police station.
On the basis of the complaint, police swung into action and arrested two youths identified as Tapas Debnath and Advaita Dash. One Aditya Das, whose name was mentioned in the FIR is still at large.
Tripura said the girl was medically examined and admitted to a local hospital for treatment.
The opposition Congress and CPI-M held demonstration before the Kalyanpur police station today demanding stringent action.
TIPRA Motha, a tribal based political party, which rules the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), also demanded immediate arrest of the culprits.
Swapna Debbarma, an women leader of TIPRA Motha said her party would organize strong movement against the government unless all the FIR named persons are arrested immediately and also demanded safety and security of the tribal women in the state.
In a separate incident of alleged gang rape of a 16-year-old girl in Tripura’s Unakoti district on October 19, the opposition Congress and the CPI(M) demanded the arrest of all the accused, while the BJP dismissed the charge.
Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Kumarghat, Biplab Debbarma told reporters that three people including a women was arrested in this connection but police was active to arrest the other people, who were involved with the incident.
The opposition CPI-M and Congress demanded immediate arrest of all the culprits in the incident.
Congress spokesperson, Asish Saha said, since the name of a minister’s son was involved with the incident of gang rape his party demanded a statement from the Chief Minister, Manik Saha.
Secretary of the Tripura unit of CPI-M, Jitendra Chowdhury said, “We demand a thorough inquiry of the incident as the name of a minister’s son has come up in the incident”.
However, BJP has rubbished the allegation of involvement of minister’s son in the incident as baseless.
Information and Culture Minister Sushanta Chowdhury told reporters that minister’s son was not present in Kumarghat during the incident.
“We have ample proof that he was out of the place since October 10 and the incident occurred on October 9. The allegations are politically motivated and aimed at tarnishing the image of the government”, he said. FD JK
