Agartala, Feb 26 (FD) Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Wednesday said that if we could follow the essence of ‘One nation, one election’ the country would be more developed, politics would be more stable and the financial condition of the country would be more vigorous .
“If we can implement the theory of one nation, one election, the country’s economy would be stronger, politics would be more stable and the country would be more prosperous in terms of the economy”, Chief Minister said in an event of the stake holders meeting organised by the Government at the Rabindra Bhavan here.
It was the proposal of the BJP made as poll pledge in the year 1984, but could not be implemented due to the opposition by the UPA that time.
“But, I have no doubt that if the system could be introduced, the voters of the country would be encouraged, the foundations of the democracy could be stronger and we would be able to reduce huge expenditure in elections”, he said.
Saha said that this bill was introduced in the Loksabha in 2024, where only 198 members gave their votes opposing the bill, when 278 cast their votes in favour of the bill.
However, this bill is now under the select committee of the parliament for further scrutiny.
He said, “Till 1967 people gave their votes for the assembly and the Loksabha elections together. Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji thinks for the country seriously. If the system could be introduced, voter’s turnout would increase and we could be economically stronger”.
Saha said, with the introductions of the bill the GDP of the country will increase 1.5% more and use of the black money would reduce.
He said there was a committee headed by the former President Ramnath Kovind where all the members including Amit Shah and Golam Nabi Azad voted in favour of the bill. FD JK
